AJAYDESMA9Week1 blog post

Week 1 commentary

After completing all the readings for this week, I have learned each author's interpretation on culture and science of Art and cultural expression. Professor Vensa holds the perspective that behind the division between science and humanities has created a loss in productivity and discovery. Furthermore, she believes that art constantly involves references from the person’s viewpoint of culture, media, and what is observed in society today. C.P Snow capitalizes on division between Art and social science and argues that this division is a result of modern views among scientists that often reinforces the culture of restrictive judgments between the two sciences. D. Bohm argues that creativity is an abstract term isn't be defined. Furthermore, he argues that art contains scientific properties and universal laws, and that originality is a result of constant trial and error with improvement.  Wilson Steven holds the opinion that in the modern world, artists have been increasing their use of technology to express art. He also believes science and technology are widely different due to the fact science is used to produce technology. John Brockman holds the opinion that the gap between the humanities and science has only been widening, and evidences the gap between the jargon of the two. He also cites an example of the intersection between art and science in the case of map production and the collaboration between the two professionals.

In my own experience, I unfortunately see the division between the two sciences only increasing. The terms “North campus” and “South campus” unfortunately are used to increase divergence between the two sciences. Furthermore, many science majors often look down on those from “North campus” because of their lack of skills of chemistry, math, ect.

I have a genuinely new perspective in which I believe that art is often used to improve the nature of the STEM field and vice versa.I believe that if one were well versed in producing creative artistic impressions, it will result in the student producing more creative, out of the box proofs or solutions to economics problem. As far as application to my own life, I personally believe the use of art will not only equip me with better tools to succeed academically, but also give me the insight to express and pursue creative research ideas in Economics topics, that i would otherwise be ignorant of.
